I took a few months off in the attempt of getting my book published but Wednesday I started my first round of query letters back agents, and well so far not so good. I read on an agent's blog not to long ago that "No news, means NO NEWS!" However, that does not actually make me feel any better about the way things are going. In less than 48 hours I have received 5 rejections, something that is not exactly great on the ego. Not to mention the one that came about 50 minutes after the letter went out via email. The note was two sentences long with the basic thanks but no thanks response, but seriously two sentences that is all you could come up with was all my brain could manage.
Now this has gotten me thinking about the whole issue of form letters. I understand agents are busy and they get a ton of query letters everyday of the week. Still, a few of these letters could use some tweaking, or maybe the answer is more than one simple catchall form letter. There is the question of does my book stand a chance, or am I wasting my time that could be addressed very simple. As well as the questions of how close am I to being there, is the market to full of this type of book, or are you really just to overwhelmed with authors that you can not take on anyone new. I know I may be asking a lot here but seriously did all the agents in the world go to a special class called Writing Rejections Form Letters 101 because everyone of them read the exact same.
Of course this could all be the world's biggest dream, even bigger than my dream of being published. No matter what I do have to say agents that simply put "NO THANK YOU, NOT FOR ME!" on the top of your originally query letter and mail it back to you should either take my suggestions or steal another agents letter and put your info on the top. Anything would be better than what you have done to this point. Just for anyone reading this saying no way would an agent actually do this I have the letter sitting on my desk as inspiration, because when I do get published and at some point I will I'm going to mail a copy of the book to this agent, along with a snotty letter and their rejection attached - unprofessional yes but so was the agent.
Well, Time to check the email account and keep my eyes open for anything back from the agents, who know maybe today is the day someone will ask for a copy of the book.
